Sony plans to have two million PSVR2 headsets ready for consumers to purchase by March 2023, a new Bloomberg report claims. Mass production reportedly kicked into gear last month and hasn't hit any snags or faced any supply chain constraints up until now. The platform holder plans to release the next-gen device early next year, providing us with a rough estimate of how many units could be available at launch.
In comparison, it took Sony's first PSVR headset over a year to sell two million units, but it released during a time when virtual reality wasn't quite as commonplace as it is now. Headsets like the Oculus Quest 2 have made the technology more accessible at a cheaper price point. As of January 2020, PSVR had sold five million units. Suggestions Sony wants to have two million headsets ready for PSVR2's launch period — almost half of PSVR's entire install base — would indicate the company is investing heavily in the optional PS5 add-on.
Games like Horizon Call of the Mountain, Firewall Ultra, and The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution have already been announced for PSVR2, and a recent set of glowing hands on previews suggest Sony has a winner on its hands. Although, we do know games for the original PSVR headset won't be playable on PSVR2.
More information can be found in our PSVR2 guide. Will you be buying one of those two million units? Get saving in the comments below.

In the current financial climate I can see this bombing heavily
@Mikey856 Doubt it. 1200 usd and more video cards are still selling like hot cakes. 70 dollar games may be an issue though, especially in places outside the U.S. where game prices are getting nuts.
What a waste of resources. Sony barely can support their home console with first party software but is really trying to continue this nonsense.
@JAMes-BroWWWn I love how positive everyone is on this site.
Typical exclusive Mochizuki news:
Production started a few days ago and hasn’t met any issue yet the people familiar said.
Sony is planning to produce bs number in vague window next year.
You can bet in a few month he’ll have exclusive news that Sony either doubled or cut by half production number. 🤣
For me, this is the quintessential "wait for a heavy discount in a year or two" product. VR is VR and there's only so much of it that my eyes can take.
Great to see everyone woke up in a nice and positive mood this morning!
@jrt87 You sold it way too early, you never even played some of the best games. PSVR1 had a lot of fun games, problem was the tech on it, moves were not the best for it. Sony has God of War Ragnorock coming in a month. They are making PS5 games.
Doubt they will sell as quick as Sony wants.
This high sales number could indicate a relatively low price.
Day 1 for me, idc
@Voltan Agreed. VR is underrated. People have not played a lot of the best games. PSVR1 didn't even have analog sticks for the move and it was still very fun, PSVR2 will blow it away.
@JAMes-BroWWWn BARELY support? What planet are you on mate. Horizon, GT7, Last of Us Remake, God of War Ragnorak. How is that barely supporting?
@Angelus3K People are always complaining about stuff. Xbox released virtually no first party games this year, yet everyone on here acts like they pump them out. They supported PS5 faster with first party software than any Playstation in history.
@Coltaine22 I unfortunately haven't tried PSVR and in general my last "VR" experience is from the 90s but I like everything I'm hearing about this one.
I just hope some key PSVR games are ported but that's almost guaranteed. I need to play Astro.
@Voltan It's actually great that you waited. All the best games will probably get ports and although I really enjoyed PSVR the tech was a bit ahead of its time. You are gonna get a way better experience with PSVR2.
Very excited about this.
This headset feels like a real next gen leap that we used to get back in the day. Like how you were aware the PS1 would be amazing compared to the Mega Drive, but you didn't even know how far short your own expectations were until you fired up FF7 or RE2 for the first time, when the day before you had been playing Micro Machines Turbo Tournament 96.
Got myself a chunk of cash set aside to pick this up (providing the final price is prohibitively extortionate) and I can't wait to do me some robo-dino hunting.
I'm hoping this will also be made to work on PC, if so I can finally sell off my old headset.
@Mikey856
The people who buy expensive luxury electrical products at release are not so much the ones struggling in this economy. If things continue like this for another year or two then it’ll start to have a bigger impact I guess.
As long as it’s not stupid expensive of course. Any more than 750 and I’ll certainly wait for a drop. But as far as I’m concerned this is where true next gen begins. Everything else is not very meaningful a leap.
Can't wait.
Even if they were to port the best 20 games from PSVR it would imho be a classic move. The lighter headset, the less faff to set up, the tighter visuals and of course most importantly the controllers makes this PSVR 2++++ and that's worth £400 of my money .
Quest 2 is a great device but its held back by its limited power in standalone mode (this won't have that) and by the faff of configuring everything bar the kitchen sink when linking to a PC (this wont have that).
In my view PSVR2 is sure winner now that the setup, fidelity and of course controllers are sorted.
Please please, do the ports. So many great possibilities in the PSVR catalogue.
Great news, hoping it won’t be a race to preorder one of the few my local retailer gets in.
I can’t wait for this, easily my most anticipated gaming product. Bring it on.
Honestly can't wait for this to release. Probably will wait for a discount but we'll definitely be getting one. Even tday Beat saber on psvr probably gets played as much by my wife and her mates as I play on any of my other games. Definitely hasn't gone to waste
I’ll be one of those 2 million if I can get one before they sell out.
@LiamCroft
Good morning man.
Actually I was in a sad mood with all the grim serious news we get (not gaming unimportant news) but this Mochizuki article made me smile.
I totally understand push reporting this. However wouldn’t you say there isnt any news of substance?
Production started last month there’s no issue yet. (Today is 3rd). Okay then 🤷🏼♂️
Is he in Jim Ryan’s head to know how many unit produced next year already ? Even Jim Ryan may not know yet. M just said production just started.
And he would know that already 🙄
Sorry to question it but the man has a history of questionable rumours.
@Shepherd_Tallon I loved Micro Machines on the mega drive! Such a good game
Meh, they should just make more PS5 consoles instead of PSVR2 or raising the PS5 price. Or the resources that make games for VR should make games for their consoles or redesigning the cluttered mess that is the PS5 OS.
By the way nobody talks about PSVR1, even though it got games and had some support it seemed like a PS Vita to me.
Really looking forward to psvr2 ,really enjoyed psvr,psvr2 will be on another level ,and fantastic that sony innovate, here's hoping I can get one at launch ,what with scalpers etc etc and will have to be quick to pre order when they go live ,also of course as long as price isn't to high ,but I'd expect 400 quid ish maybe bit more or maybe bit less who knows ,but do think with the less mucking around to setup with only one wire this time and everything else that'll be so much better ,I'm certainly sold on it ,can't wait and also hope that everyone else that would love to have one can get one and hopefully much less of this scalpering nonsense that stops people who really love gaming to be able to get one ,although who I am kidding ,I hope sony do pre orders through their official sony gaming website or something like that at least anyway psvr2 is gonna be very special I think
@JJ2 Do you not think it comes across a bit weird how you continually attack this one and only journalist? You don't do it to anyone else on the site, so maybe tone it down a little.
I'm sure Jim Ryan knows how many units of the new device he's launching next year will want to be produced.
😂 even if you don't want to buy it sure does looks impressive. Strange to be so negative when Sony is doing something interesting.
@Boucho11 It was. Making your own tracks was crazy fun at the time too.
I am very interrested in the PSVR2, but I want to see the amount of investment Sony is preparing to put in the platform.
For their multiplayer/live service crap they put 10 exclusive titles in production and bought a studio for $7B. I don't see that yet for PSVR2. Also the promise of hybrid games still has to come to fruition for the PS exclusives. So I wait until they come true to their promise.
@KaijuKaiser I firmly believe that the average gamer is not happy about their life and take it out on others to feel better about themselves. I can't think of anything else that would explain that much negativity over the most trivial things.
I'll need to see some better games announced before I buy one.
Gran Turismo 7 for starters!
I can’t wait to get this. I jumped into VR quite late with PSVR and whilst I enjoyed it, I always felt it wasn’t quite “there” yet. My only
Hope Is they port something of the games across. I had a great fishing game I used to play on it that I’d love to see again.
Loved PSVR despite its obvious shortcomings. So obviously, I'm very hyped for this one. Day one for me.
Day one baby, cannot wait
I CAN'T WAIT!!
I'll buy one whatever the cost. I feel sorry for all you who aren't going to get this even more than you feel self-righteous about telling us it's not worth it 😁😊😆
I don't think they'll having a problem selling all 2 million. VR is in a much better place than when the first one launched and if they bring the games I reckon it's going to be a massive success. Especially with all the new tech and features the psvr2 has.
Thank god that Sony and Nintendo keep trying to innovate and move gaming in different directions.
they could produce 10 or 10million, they will not know the demand until the price and game lineup is announced
Holy hell you guys will complain about ANYTHING Sony does, no matter what. How is reporting that they’re not half-arsing a much anticipated headset considered a bad thing? I see some people mentioning a lack of software first party wise. It seems perfectly fine to me, especially when it’s more than the competition. Hell, ragnarok releases in a single month but you’d think no game has come all year given the animosity that GOOD news brings
Everyone bookmark this page. I'll bet you the most vehement naysayers here will be praising PSVR2 and VR in general in one years time!
@Coltaine22 yeah us the minority of gamers that buy this stuff will love it. Most psvr2s will never leave there boxes
@Perturbator psvr sold barely 5 million units bro
Two million units is awesome. It means there shouldn't be TOO many issues getting one at launch.
Great news!
@Voltan Definitely! Hope there are enough headsets to supply all those who are interested day one!💪
I did enjoy my first PSVR headset but ended up selling it as alot of the games gave me terrible motion sickness. To the point where I had to go lye down for a while
I'm sure I've read somewhere a while back that this new headset would go a long way to solving that problem (no idea how but I'm sure I read it somewhere)
Until I read some reviews and find out more about the effects of motion sickness I wouldn't be ordering one straight away.
Also the price is pretty important too..... I'm guessing by Sony's reluctance to tell us the price so far that it's going to be pretty expensive
Can't lie - was a PSVR day one adopter but now I have the Quest 2 and a PC, I'm not really feeling the PSVR2. I think the killer point for me was the lack of backwards compatibility. I guess there may be some upgrades or ports but it feels like they are killing some great exclusives.
@Member_the_game yep very expensive and just like vita it’ll be launching in the middle of a financial crisis.. vita was considered a failure after selling 12 million units .
@get2sammyb This is my hope too. Also, surely if they have this many available the scalpers will have no market to exploit either.
@naruball I've had this thought too many times. I was going to do a thesis on it in college at one point from a consumer behaviour angle, but as soon as I started to consider the work I'd need to do I realised I was in way over my head.
@thefourfoldroot1 @Shepherd_Tallon I exactly my point. If people think the cost of living is bad now wait til next year. Yeah I’ll be fine and seemingly others on here too. But most won’t be and affording this AND a ps5 will be out of the question.
The situation is different now than when PSVR1 was released. Now you have, excluding the general global economy issues, a relative new console that your fans cannot buy easily, you increase the price of it and force bundles to them citing, among others, production issues and yet you split resources producing something few people want that is a follow up to a not so successful device. I think that it is one of a few times when fans can reasonably criticize the platform owner. The critique of the remasters is more to joke tbh.
Cant wait personally, i love VR gaming, i love that Sony is pulling a major risk to support the medium...im there Day 1.
People who want it will pay. People who are thinking about it will wait. People who have no interest in it should touch some grass and stop commenting weird comments.
@Mikey856
So, what’s your solution. Make it crap? Or not release it at all?
Rather the higher price. Even if not a single new game is made and all we have are easy ports of existing PCVR games it’ll be worth it. Plus Sony will be selling their PSVR2 games on PC now too, increasing the player base from just those with PSVR2.
There are more than enough people to make it viable. Even years ago that was the case. Sony have sold around 6 million units of its old headset and that was behind the times even at release. This isn’t. And there are a lot of people out there who are dying to jump back in to high quality VR after all the Quest rubbish.
Sure money’s a bit tighter for people now, but not so much the type of people who would buy a top line VR headset and own a PS5.
@thefourfoldroot1 there isn’t a solution it will sell what it sells. All I’m saying is it won’t sell very many and with the cost of living that number will be even fewer. I loved psvr but with sales numbers at 5 million (in the good-ish times) I can see it being a massive fail 🤷🏻♂️
@thefourfoldroot1 5 million out of 120 million ps4 owners brought a psvr. So just around 6/7% of owners. if ps5 sales figures are at 20 odd million so far and we go on similar figures they’ll barely sell a million so everyone who wants one should be fine
I would've been day one purchase for sure if it would've been backward compatible. As it is, maybe I'll just skip PSVR2 like the first. Got all these PSVR1 games from PS+ and play at home but no way to play them. PSVR1 doesn't feel like a good investment since it's being replaced nor does PSVR2 since I'd be starting with an empty library.
@Mikey856
Why do you think it’ll be a similar percentage? VR uptake has come a long way, and this goes from PSVR being one of the weakest systems, to PSVR2 being one of the best (the PCVR market fell off a cliff with Quest and PS5 with foveated rendering is far closer to a top end PC than was the case with PS4).
Plus early adopters of PS5 are going to have a larger percentage of early adopters for PSVR2 than PSVR had as a percentage of PS4 which had been out with a number of price drops for casual players by that point.
I think 2mill sounds about right for first batch.
sorry but i think they are going to struggle to sell those 2 million it will be expensive and not everyone who bought PSVR1 will want to dip in again for PSVR2
Am really looking forward to the psvr2. I know there’s a lot of negativity etc and everyone’s entitled to their opinions. Loved the psvr and can’t wait for this one. Day one for me too
half life alyx please!
Waiting and ready to throw any amount of cash at this. Tell me when and where, Sony!
I'm gonna take this Day One. I trully am. And without giving A CENT to any f....g scalper.
I'm refreshing the official website. F5, 24h by day. Everyday. I'm on it. I want it.
Oh, and I really hope there's gonna be a little system update, after its release, to watch 3D movies on it. It was one of the most beloved features of the first PSVR for many, many fans.
And Avatar 2 can make 3D cool again, in people's mind, I'm sure of it. (I just saw the remaster of the first one on a big, big screen, and it was awesome)
@LiamCroft
Oh I didnt guess you’d take it this way as I was being just straightforward.
I’m honestly lost on what I can say here these days.
Take care.
Not too long to wait then I'm keen to get one but any more than £499 will probably be really hard to justify given the way things are going.
I think most decent PS1 VR titles will get a port for little cost and be available around launch, so I don't think lack of BC will actually be too problematic.
I'm also expecting a lot of ports from PC VR games within 6 months and wouldn't be surprised if VR2 is usable on PC's within 12 months of release. Sony seem to embracing PC more and more as time goes on.
Will cinematic mode work for 2D PS4 backwards compatibility? I enjoyed playing retro games like Arcade Archives on PSVR1.
@Coltaine22 You have a few people here that complain about everything James and Ion are so bloody annoying its baffling they even want to be on a Playstation site.
@Bobobiwan Same here my PS5 took a long time but i give scalpers a dime i rather not something then pay nickel extra to some scumbag.
@Flaming_Kaiser Exactly. If nobody buys from these sc...ags, the all system looses its point.
I did the same, long ago, for my NES Mini. The prices online were just crazy for this little thing (more than 500 bucks, sometimes !), everybody was loosing their minds !
I just waited, patiently, months and months, and managed to find one at the regular price, on a regular store.
I did it too for my PS5, and will again for the PSVR 2.
